Paul Sabourin gives Dave pointers
on Lock history. Dave's new novel, Dead Lock, is an action/thriller
set in the middle of WWII. It centers on a Nazi plot to destroy all four locks during the commissioning ceremony
for the MacArthur Lock on July 13, 1943. If the German effort succeeds, iron ore shipments will cease and U.S. war
production will screech to a halt.

next to a tug boat propellor outside the Locks Visitors Center. The Soo Locks were the most heavily guarded piece of
real estate in North America during WWII. There were 7,300 U.S. troops stationed in Sault Ste. Marie during the War to guard
them. They were that important to the U.S. war effort.

Noted author and Soo historian
Bernie Arbic points to some interesting historical facts from his book City of the Rapids: Sault Ste. Marie's
Heritage. Dave has spent many days checking and rechecking information to ensure the accuracy of
his new novel. In earlier trips to the Soo he interviewed a newspaper reporter who worked at the Soo until 1941 and a former
Army Intelligence Officer who was at the commissioning of the MacArthur Lock in 1943.
